Abstract:

This study was completed to determine if children with physical challenges have decreased opportunities at playgrounds and what priorities for playground equipment are identified by their parents/gurardians. Surveys were sent to a convenience sample of 13 facilities and were distributed to parents/guardians of children with physical challenges. The results indicate that although children with physical challenges visit community playgrounds, a significant amount of assistance is needed to utilize current equipment, specifically swings, monkey bars, and rings. The most important pieces of equipment indicated were swings and sliding boards. The data provides occupational therapists with information regarding the need to address physical accessibility and serve as environmental consultant in the designing of playgrounds that can be utilized by all children.
