Picture It: The Power of Visually-based Language Representation
We can’t escape pictures—and the messages they’ve been designed to
convey—in our daily lives. Although we commonly regard pictures as
simple and straightforward representations of the world around us,
and often use icons as the basis of communication systems, our
clients—even those with intact vision, cognition, and language—may
be challenged by some types of picture-based language systems. At the
same time, there is emerging evidence that technology-enabled visual
representations can be incredibly powerful vehicles for facilitating
language learning and use.
This presentation will sensitize attendees to a variety of picture access
issues. It will review emerging evidence from a number of domains,
and explore the impact of features such as color, fidelity, and
animation on understanding and use of pictured information.
