Core Vocabulary Lightens Loads in the Classroom

Selecting and entering new vocabulary for daily lessons, circle time, or activities has become a burden for clinicians, special educators, and family. This presentation offers strategies to decrease the need for vocabulary selection and implementation, while focusing on language growth and development.

Teaching Language with Pictures

Many aspects of language are difficult to teach with pictures. Many words are hard to represent by pictures. A systematic approach and a use of motor planning can help students distinguish between “me, my, and mine” with little confusion, even before they can read. This presentation talks about language issues and networked pictorial representation.

The Nature of Language

All languages are abstract. Words like “of ” are dif- ficult to represent for the non-reader. Categorization and word linking can help students with serious impairments grow into a better understanding of language — both expressive and receptive.

Language Acquisition for AAC Users of all Levels

There are many theories of language acquisition. Several methods for helping students traverse the various stages of language acquisition. Brown’s Language Stages in relationship to AAC will be a focus.
